Project Overview

Capstan Station is the first infill station on the Canada Line, located at No. 3 Road and Capstan Way in Richmond, BC. This $52 million project was developed to meet the area’s growing transit demand and aligns with Richmond’s vision for high-density, transit-oriented development. Constructed between two active Canada Line stations, Bridgeport and Aberdeen, it required highly specialized planning and coordination to ensure the safety of crews and the uninterrupted operation of transit services.

Notable features include mass timber dowel-laminated roof panels supported by large steel transfer frames, a modular construction strategy that minimized service disruptions, and a suspended glass concourse designed to meet stringent seismic requirements. The station also incorporates sliding platform edges engineered to accommodate long-term settlement and seismic movement.

In recognition of its technical innovation and collaborative execution, Capstan Station received the 2025 ACEC-BC Award of Excellence in the Transportation and Transit category.

Primary Services

MAKE provided comprehensive project management services throughout the design and construction of Capstan Station. This included coordinating with stakeholders such as TransLink, the City of Richmond, and the development consortium; tracking the project's budget and schedule; and managing construction risk within an active transit corridor. MAKE also supported interface coordination and provided construction administration oversight during critical phases to ensure seamless delivery and minimal disruption to ongoing transit operations.
