Project Overview
Located on the east coast of Campbell Island in British Columbia's Central Coast region, the Bella Bella Hospital Replacement Project marks a transformative step in rural healthcare within the Heiltsuk Nation. Completed in collaboration with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and the Heiltsuk Nation, the new facility replaces the aging hospital and includes additional components such as local housing and long-term care spaces.
The project addressed unique challenges posed by its remote location in a tsunami evacuation zone and its limited accessibility, as the community of Waglisla (Bella Bella) is reachable primarily by ferry and air. These logistical complexities were managed with meticulous planning, ensuring that construction materials and workers reached the site efficiently.
The result is a modern healthcare facility that integrates cultural sensitivity into its design and operations, providing improved healthcare services that meet the specific needs of the community. This project exemplifies a commitment to advancing rural healthcare infrastructure while honouring the traditions and values of Indigenous communities.
MAKE provided overall project leadership throughout the planning and development process. This included conducting market sounding, offering procurement options, and delivering recommendations to VCH during the Concept and Business Plan phases. These recommendations were accepted by the Ministry of Health, enabling the project to progress smoothly to completion.
