Project Overview

Located on the east coast of Campbell Island in British Columbia’s Central Coast region, the Bella Bella Hospital Replacement Project marks a transformative step in rural healthcare for the Heiltsuk Nation. Delivered in collaboration with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and the Heiltsuk Nation, the new facility replaces the aging hospital and introduces additional components, including local housing and long-term care spaces.

The project addressed unique challenges tied to its remote location within a tsunami evacuation zone and the limited accessibility of Waglisla (Bella Bella), which is reachable primarily by ferry or air. These logistical complexities required meticulous planning to ensure materials, equipment, and workers could arrive efficiently and safely.

The result is a modern healthcare facility that integrates cultural sensitivity into both its design and operations, providing improved services tailored to the community’s needs. The project exemplifies a commitment to advancing rural healthcare infrastructure while honouring the traditions and values of Indigenous communities.

MAKE provided overall project leadership throughout the planning and development process, including conducting market sounding, evaluating procurement options, and delivering recommendations to VCH during the Concept and Business Plan phases. These contributions helped guide the project through approval and into successful delivery, resulting in a vital healthcare facility that now serves as a cornerstone of the community.
