2023 Reflections by Alan Nicholson

It’s Friday December 22, and once again a sense of peace settles over the industry as we take a collective breath. For a moment, we can focus on our gratitude and admiration for each other in continuously striving to improve our work, our careers, our relationships and our communities.

The development and construction industry in BC is a powerful community. We create the frame for the lives of millions of people, affecting how they live, work and play. Yes, we have daily struggles and internal turmoil. But we also have greatness – moments where we align and create significant change. I have seen a number of great moments in my time – the latest being our pivot and perseverance through the COVID times.

I believe 2024 will be a year of change. Many elections will be held worldwide, AI will disrupt our work/life patterns, and, with any luck, inflation will be leashed. Through this, the province and country will rely on us to alleviate the infrastructure problems relating to housing, healthcare, education, and all the civil infrastructure required for population growth.

These are difficult problems, within a time of great change. Only a strong and aligned industry could offer reliance and hope.

How proud I am that this is what we are.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all my friends and colleagues!

Let’s swing for the fences.
